Spelljammer stories hold that thousands of years ago, Bekel was a green and fertile world, colonized by a union of [[human|humans]], [[elf|elves]], and [[dwarf|dwarves]] from another sphere. They thrived, until one day a mysterious "dark star" fell from space, first corrupting the Bekelites with evil, then slaying and raising them as undead, mainly [[wraith|wraiths]] and [[wight|wights]].

Bekel is ruled by an archwight who calls himself the [[master_of_the_star]], as he wields a mace whose tip is a remnant of the star and is a mighty [[warlock#necromancer|necromancer]]. The hundreds of thousands of undead under his control have turned the upper levels of the ice (most of Bekel's former atmosphere, frozen) into a complex network of necropolises. It is believed that the undead of Bekel are in the last stages of developing Spelljamming technology in order to spread their undeath to other planets.

Bekel has a circumference of 13,708 miles.
