Magic on Jesenreth
On Jesenreth magic is a pervasive yet still mysterious to most people force. To see it in action is not uncommon, but few regular folks know how it works or can use it. Some accept it, some fear it, and some make their living by it, but magic remains inscrutable. It seems to obey rules, but ones few can comprehend.
Sages define magic as the manipulation and application of an energy called crea, also called "heka" (pronounced "hee-ka" ), to produce effects in the world. Crea is said to be the same pure potentiality (we would call it vacuum state fluctuations) the gods used to create the world, and which is still present everywhere and inexhaustible. To cast a spell is to do a very tiny and temporary version of what the gods did.
There are two general types of magic, the arcane and the divine. Arcane magic is the direct accessing by an individual of crea through complex study and techniques, natural talent, or the power of a force like sound or ki. Wizards, sorcerers, bards, and monks use arcane magic. Divine magic is accessing crea through a relationship with a supernatural being, serving as a conduit for that being's power. Clerics, druids, rangers, paladins, and warlocks use divine magic.
