Vast, deep ocean occupying most of the northern hemisphere of Jesenreth. The Ocean is a major conduit for world trade (and priacy). It is dotted with thousands of tiny islands, most having no name, called after whatever captain is sheltering there that week. Many support life of some kind, a few have small settlements of sapient life, a few have old ruins. Some notable known islands include the Chibouholm Isles, Brisrior, the Stormarches, Seremnos, and Adon Aither.

Beneath the Ocean lie several kingdoms of aquatic sapients, including merfolk and their enemies the sahuagin.

The strangest part of the Ocean is The Silence.

A major hazard in the Ocean is sea serpents, colossal, and sometimes intelligent, serpentine monsters at the top of the ocean food chain, with the possible exception of the great_whales. The greatest of these monsters is said to be gomdrahk_father_of_serpents.

Other strange creatures of the Ocean include Flower Clouds, biduzan, and krimorkans.

In terms of crossing the Ocean, going from Daflos to lutran by regular merchant passenger sailing ship would take 5 to 7 months, usually on the high end of that range due to multiple stops. Hundreds of merchant ships provide shipping and passage over the Ocean, including Splendid Anger, The Sad Manta, Grimli's Gold, and Once Was a Mermaid.

The most common hazard of Ocean crossing, aside from bad weather, is piracy. Some of the notable pirates known to trouble the Ocean are:

Rajan Nilak and his ship The Final Blow: Human pirate who was formally the captain of a Ploi Drajiti naval vessel. Going AWOL after feeling disrespected by his superiors, he stole his ship and killed any of his crew who would not join him, and in the 10 years since has been a serious problem for shipping in the area around his former island and even as far south as the Ketten Islands. Close to being caught numerous times, he has always escaped. Known as a merciless villain, his ship is a small but fast and well-armed carrack crewed by about 50 pirates easily as cutthroat as their master.

Susluk Vask and his ships Fang, Puncture, and Crush: Yuan-ti Abomination pirate, exiled from the Yar Kanti Islands. With a small fleet of sleek black ships, he terrorizes the central Ocean and is constantly sought by the authorities of every civilized port. He has taken as many one ship a week, though he is known for letting many of his victims live, if they do not resist, and never dealing with, and actively opposing, slavers. His crews are mixed, and feature some from almost every sapient race native to the world.

Rittar Blarksohn and his ship the Devil Squid: Blarksohn has two distinctions as a pirate: he is a dwarf, who very rarely engage in piracy, and his ship is actually a magically-powered submarine of his own design and manufacture. A former tinker of Thoiles who was laughed at for his ideas of an underwater ship, he is not laughed at now, as he specializes in preying on the shipping of dwarven goods. His ship can run silently and overturn a ship by emerging underneath it, if polite requests by magical message to prepare to be boarded are not heeded. The Squid can then cut a ship to pieces with its tentacles and take what it wants. His crew numbers about 30, mostly fellow dwarves.

The Sonra Sisters and their ships Brutal and Savage: Aasimar twins originally from Pleus Scon, Bley and Kilas Sonra are wizards, unusual for pirates, and are known for using illusions to help them take ships and evade pursuers. Allegedly turning to piracy simply because they were bored, they came from a wealthy noble family, who long ago disowned them. The Sonras are known to have a particular grudge against men, often killing male captains but allowing female captains to live, and most of their crews are female. Their ships are both corvettes said to possess magical armor and weapons, and they chiefly pillage in the northern seas.
